Arlene's Grocery
Biography & Highlights
The bass shakes the sidewalk on Stanton before you even reach the door. You’re handing ten bucks to a guy who looks half asleep while somebody’s guitar pedal board is getting hauled past your ankles. It's loud, packed, and sticky right from the second you cross the threshold.
The front bar area gets jammed with people trying to dodge the crush pushing toward the back room stage. You can't see the openers if you're stuck near the pool table, so you’ve got to squeeze past elbows and heavy jackets to catch a glimpse. The ceilings are low and the walls have soaked up decades of spilled bourbon and sweat.
Sound bleeds straight from the monitors right into your skull, and the bartenders don't have time for hesitation when you're ordering a can of cheap lager. There's no fancy VIP section or breathing room once a decent local band kicks off their set. You just stand your ground on the scuffed floorboards and let the noise take over until the lights come up and everyone spills back out onto the Lower East Side block.
